The thesis contains an edition of 26 unpublished Greek documentary papyri, both official and private, from the Byzantine period, which have been made available to me by the Egypt Exploration Society in London and by Dr. W.Brashear of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, Twenty one of the documents come from Oxyrhynchos, two from Aphrodito and three are of unknown provenance. The edition of the papyri follows the pattern of P.Oxy. publication: 1. Description of the papyrus, (physical appearance, measurements and style of writing) 2. Introduction, general discussion of the document's content 3. Transcription and critical apparatus 4. Translation into English and 5. Commentary on individual aspects of the text. The documents have been subdivided into official and private ones. The private ones, arranged in groups according to their content, are divided into those coming from or possibly connected with, the Apion archive (Nos 6-20) and those not belonging to it. As for the diplomatic transcription of the texts, this is the result of my intention to present the text as it appears originally and not to prejudice the reader but to give him the liberty to form his own interpretations and suggestions. Then, I do think that the translations and the commentaries reveal the way I have understood and interpreted the texts. With the indication PJS are given the suggestions made by Prof. P.J. Sijpesteijn, examiner of the thesis.
