Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis was undertaken between October 1983 and September 1987. It describes an experiment designed to study the 12C(gamma,pn) reaction at photon energies between 80 and 130 MeV. In this region the (gamma,pn) exit channel is known to be an important contributor to the total photon absorption cross section. It provides a testing ground for the predictions of medium- to short-range correlation effects in nuclear matter. The experimental system is able to determine completely the kinematics of the reaction. The 180 MeV microtron at Mainz University provides a 100% duty cycle primary electron beam which is then used to create bremsstrahlung photons at a 25 mum aluminium radiator. The photons are tagged by the recoil electrons which are momentum analysed by the tagging spectrometer.
