Abstract:
The University of Roehampton has four campuses and has recently built further accommodation for students. However, there are still not enough units to house all students, especially in their 2nd and 3rd years. Many students therefore live in the Private Rental Sector (PRS) within the neighbouring resident community. This research is to reflect on these students' experiences of living in the wider community and to identify the resources they use to navigate an inner London estate. In order to understand the ways students' cultural and social capitals shape their experiences and identities as (not) belonging in the local community, I will explore previous research on tradition communities within HE in an attempt to understand what it means to (not) belong to the 'invisible pedagogy' (Bernstein, 1975) of an HEI community with a focus on social class. I will explore students' capitals to understand the experiences the students have brought from home to help them negotiate this new wider community. My research will also aim to identify how the students' experiences of living within the wider community feed into their overall satisfaction of their time at university.
