Abstract: | |||||
Rare earth ion doped chaicogenide glasses are the most competitive candidate for >4 prn wavelength mid-infrared fibre lasers, which have not been demonstrated in the world to date. The main challenge is the material quality of the glass and fibre. Hence, this project explores and studies rare earth ion doped chaicogenide bulk glasses and optical fibres. The glass system investigated is Dy3+-doped Ge-As-Ga-Se that can potentially be drawn to fibre, and whose suitability for novel mid-infrared fibre lasers has been established using numerical modelling.
