Abstract:
The thesis is divided into five main parts which includes various chapters and subchapters. The five parts consists of: the introduction, section one (the Scandinavian Stone Age), section two (the Bronze Age), section three (the Iron Age and Viking Age) and finally the conclusion. I have also included an appendix consisting of overviews of archaeological finds, various maps and timelines. The bibliography can be found at the very end of the thesis. I chose to present the archaeological and historical sources in a chronological order to make it possible for the reader to follow the development of the musical practices through the ages. A journey that starts in the Mesolithic Period with the few finds of the earliest archaeological evidence of musical behaviour, to the rich archaeological finds and historic references dating to the late Iron Age.
