Abstract:
This thesis is a reflection on thoughts and observations of the turbulent years in the South Caucasus of the late 1980s and early 1990s. It is an attempt to reassess the study of the regional disputes. It is a great pleasure to appreciate my supervisor Dr Natasha Kuhrt for her immense support and advice in every single aspect of the work; also the lecturers, tutors and academic staff at King's College London, whose lectures and suggestions were invaluable for this research project. A very special thanks to my parents, who have backed my studies and intellectual growth with determined and generous support for decades. They have always believed in me and encouraged my academic research. I am grateful to Professor George Hewitt, Dr Laurence Broers, Dr Lia Tsuladze, Dr Robert Hamilton and Dr Wendy Hart for their comments and insights. Another special thanks to the British Library, which was instrumental in the research, and I am grateful for the resources they provide. I also would like to express my gratitude to all my teachers and tutors in Georgia and in the United Kingdom, whose modules and teaching shaped my ideas and inspired this research project. Finally, thanks to all those individuals who helped me to conduct the research, find sources or kindly agreed to interviews and private conversations.
