Portable microwave clocks that incorporate laser cooling promise to bring significantly improved performance compared to commercially available microwave clocks that are based on thermal atoms. This thesis reports on the development of a portable, laser-cooled ytterbium-171 trapped-ion microwave frequency standard from design to testing.
