Abstract:
Marine bacteriology has received little attention in this country and no report, published during the past forty years, could be discovered where a British bacteriologist had investigated the bacterial flora of the North Sea. Since knowledge of this flora is virtually non-existent this investigation set out to develop methods for the study of the quantitative and qualitative nature of the aerobic heterotrophic bacteria in North Sea water. Techniques for the isolation and further study of marine bacteria have been reviewed and methods developed and applied to the analysis of several water samples collected at different seasons from a station ten miles E.S.E. of Aberdeen.
