The effects of p-substitution on certain properties of the N-H bond in aniline have been examined in this experimental study. The dipole moments and NH group stretching frequencies of aniline, p-anisidine, p-toluidine, p-chloroaniline, p-bromoaniline and p-cyanoaniline have been determined in cyclohexane and dioxan and the affinity of these compounds for dioxan in solution, and for an activated alumina adsorbent at the solution-solid interface assessed. Dipole moments have been calculated from measurements of dielectric constant, refractive index and density of a series of solutions of graded concentration. The affinity of the anilines for dioxan have been determined from measurements of optical density in the ultra-violet region of the spectrum.
