Abstract: | |||||||
This creative work is comprised of an interpretation of events in the Severn estuary through Creative Writing, adopting a cross period, longue durée, from the tectonic to the postmodern in span. It is a multi-type approach and is a prosimetrum represented in poetry and prose, including short story and novella. It is designed to find or divine, locate and explore the genius loci of the great Western river of Britain. The thesis includes magic realism; an exploration of heterotopiae; storytelling about human lives through the agency of non- humans; modernist prose with its predilection for playing with language, exploring unrootedness and senses of exile and de-territoriality; free verse and Polyphonic story-telling. It is thus a creative assemblage containing lines of articulation, levels of strata and defined territories which are not ossified but rather display varying speeds and propensities to coalesce using what Ezra Pound called the “ply over ply” method giving strength and solidity from individually less robust elements.
