Details are given of the design and construction of an atomic hydrogen beam maser. The static and dynamic properties of the maser are investigated and discussed. In particular, various .methods of oscillation amplitude transient production are studied and compared with those in other beam maser systems based on hydrogen and ammonia. The analogue between hydrogen and ammonia (magnetic and electric dipole systems respectively) is discussed in some detail. The future use of the hydrogen maser constructed as a frequency standard is considered.
