The work described in this thesis is an extension of an earlier project which was concerned with the motion and distribution of solid particles in liquid fluidised beds; the previous project is briefly reviewed. A literature survey has been presented which is: directly concerned with expansion and size segregation in liquid fluidised beds. The purpose of the experimental work was to obtain quantitative data concerning the vertical distribution of particles fluidised at different liquid flowrates. The data has been used to determine whether expansion equations based on average bed properties such as voidage and mean particle diameter, are suitable for predicting the voidage for beds consisting of a range of particle sizes.
