A general theoretical inelastic analysis is developed for pin-ended prestressed concrete columns, under short term loading, which includes the effects of slenderness, magnitude and position of prestress and eccentricity of loading. A single set of equilibrium equations with a compatibility condition, incorporating a critical strain criterion and a parabolic stress block, are used to compare the results of 73 specimens, prepared by the author, and 163 concrete columns tested by other investigators. The compared results cover a wide range of length, slenderness and concrete strength and the close agreement obtained indicates that the analysis and basic assumptions yield reliable results.
