The introductory chapter covers a review of intermolecular interactions with examples of host-guest systems, including sulfonates. As X-ray crystallography is the main characterisation tool used in this thesis its theory and practice are described in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 presents a study of the geometry of RnSO3 molecules carried out using the Cambridge Crystallographic Database and associated software. An X-ray powder diffraction study of the crystallisation products obtained from aqueous solution containing guanidinium and sulfite ions is described in Chapter 4. The crystal structure of a novel sodium sulfate/chloride is also reported in this chapter. Chapter 5 presents the crystal structure of a novel sodium calcium chloride sulfate and a redetermination of sodium sulfite, both of which crystallised from deoxygenated aqueous solutions. Chapter 6 describes attempts at crystallising transition metal complexes with SO32-containing ligands which also participate in hydrogen bonding. Also, two novel crystal structures are reported in this chapter. Conclusions and suggestions for further work are presented in the final chapter and the structure of three copper (0) dipyridyl methanol complexes, two of them novel, are reported in Appendix 1.
