The discovery of a second class of high-Tc superconductors based on tetrahedral iron arsenide layers has generated enormous interest. Currently four main groups are known: 1111-type REFeAsO (RE = rare-earth) and AeFeAsF (Ae = alkaline earth), 122-type AeFe2As2, 111-type AFeAs (A = Li, Na), and the 11-type Fe1-dSe compositions with selenium rather than arsenic. The highest superconducting transition temperatures (~ 55 K) are found among the 1111-type materials. NdFeAsO was chosen as representative of the 1111-type high-Tc superconductors, and the effect of chemical substitutions explored.
