This thesis highlights the work done from the second year onwards of the PhD under the supervision of Dr. Christophe Aïssa, concentrating on the isomerisation of olefins triggered by rhodium-catalysed C‒H bond activation. The work involves delicate control of changing the reaction pathway driven by the manipulation of substrates in a highly selective fashion all using the same rhodium catalyst. The thesis includes one main chapter on relevant literature on 5-membered rhodacycles, followed by three chapters of results and discussion. The first two results and discussion chapter will highlight the majority of the work done on the rhodium-catalysed intramolecular isomerisation and hydroacylation of terminal alkenes which has recently been published. The third results chapter focuses on the asymmetric hydroacylation of terminal alkenes via parallel kinetic resolution which was also published as part of the same publication focused in the previous chapters. The experimental supporting information will conclude the fifth and final chapter of the thesis.
