Abstract:
It appears to be impossible for a molecule in which the central atom has six outer electrons to preserve a non planar structure: this is demonstrated by the absence of polarity in the boron halides, BCI3 and BF3, indicating that all four atoms in the molecule lie in a plane with the boron atom in the centre. Ammonia, arsine and phosphine, on the other hand, all have measurable dipole moments, and here the central atom holds a lone pair of electrons in excess of those forming the three covalent bonds.
