Abstract:
A plane configuration has now been assigned to the diphenyl molecule, and asymmetry in the series has been ascribed to the restriction of rotation of the two phenyl rings about their common bond. The restriction is attributed to the space effect of ortho substituents, which, if sufficiently large, act as "obstacles" to the free passage of the rings, and two enantiomorphic forms are produced.
