The investigation was carried out with the object of providing data from which the atomic susceptibility of cadmium could be calculated. The preparation of thirty cadmium compounds has been described. Two compounds, cadmium borofluoride [equation], and cadmium malonate [equation], hitherto undescribed have been obtained and their susceptibilities measured. For the greater number of analyses, an electrolytic method has been used, the exact conditions for which have been established. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of all the compounds have been made by the Grouy method, the apparatus described by Sugden having been further modified. The cadmous compounds and sub-compounds of cadmium have been definitely proved to be non-existent, but to consist of mixtures of cadmium and the corresponding cadmic compound. This proof has been established by chemical means and susceptibility measurement in the case of cadmium sub-chloride, and by chemical means in the cases of cadmous hydroxide and oxide.
