The overall objective of this study was to make accurate measurements of the terms contained in the axial momentum equation for turbulent fluid flow. The particular flow considered was one where the fluid was confined along a circular pipe of constant cross-sectional area with an inlet axisymmetric distortion produced by a calibrated orifice plate. This orifice plate severely distorted the previously flat inlet velocity profile into a highly sheared profile where very high turbulence levels were generated. but also enabled the mass flow rate to be accurately determined. The flow thus generated was studied in detail for 41 diameters downstream of this orifice plate.
