Abstract:
In this paper an account is given of strata movements induced by mining operations. The effects of removal of the coal, which is regarded as the removal of support, are dealt with and then consideration is given to the application of supports as a means of controlling the movements of the strata by resisting the pressures induced. The design of these supports, with a view to making them as effective as possible, is then dealt with. These investigations were conducted in 23 seams at a group of 15 collieries belonging to the Fife Coal Company, Limited.
