The putative CACHD1 gene was identified following a systematic search for ligand-binding
proteins as novel drug targets. The CACHD1 gene encodes CACHD1 and has a
predicted protein structure similar to that of the [alpha]2[delta] family of voltage-gated Ca2+
channel (VGCC) auxiliary subunits, which modulates the biophysical properties and
plasma membrane expression of VGCCs. On this basis, the hypothesis that CACHD1
represents a novel [alpha]2[delta]-like VGCC auxiliary subunit was tested.
