This thesis is concerned with those aspects of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) particularly important in simulations of processes involving molten metal. It contains a thorough review of the current state-of-the-art in this field presented in a style suitable for the general engineering/scientific reader. Two novel techniques are presented in this work for the very first time. Firstly, flow through interdendritic arrays and the numerical determination of permeability is modelled using a combination of standard CFD techniques linked to novel Cellular Automata models of dendrite evolution. Secondly, a Monte Carlo/Cellular Automaton approach is used to provide a completely new volumetric front-tracking algorithm that incorporates stochastic behaviour. This algorithm is demonstrated for both two- and three-dimensional filling problems in pressure die-castings. In all cases original CFD codes are used that are first validated in the thesis using standard test cases. These models are then compared to published data and/or published experimental observations and good agreement is found. Sensitivity analysis and related numerical experimentation results are also presented to gauge the robustness of the proposed techniques.
