The technique of discharge-flow is employed for a mechanistic study of the reactions of hydrogen atoms with propylene and with propane. On-line analysis is by gas chromatography, and reaction product distributions are obtained for varying conditions of hydrogenatom flow and temperature. The complete mechanism for either reaction is input into a computer program using "known" rate constant values; product distributions thus obtained by numerical integration are compared with experimental values. Evaluation of such data and manipulation of certain rate constant values provide an iterative procedure whereby a "best fit" to experiment is obtained. Rate constant values for each step of both mechanisms are tabulated. The validity of the mechanisms themselves, which are established in the literature, is substantiated in this study.
