Section 1 of this Thesis contains a review of carbanion chemistry with particular emphasis on the reactions of boron-stabilised carbanions. Section 2 contains a review of oxirane chemistry and is followed by reports of the results of a study on the oxyalkylative opening of oxiranes to yield 1,3-diols using carbanions derived from B-alkyldimesitylboranes. Largely unsuccessful attempts to produce δ-lactols via the reaction of the allyldimesitylborane anion are discussed. Finally, Section 3 reports the results of a study on the synthetic applications of dimesitylboryl(phenylthio)methane. It is shown that it may be readily deprotonated to produce an anion α- to boron and sulphur. Alkylation and boron-Wittig reactions are presented with the production of alkyl phenyl sulphides and vinyl sulphides, respectively, which are discussed.
