Abstract:
This thesis reports on the development and application of gradient methods of minimization that have quadratic termination properties. These properties extend to the case of minimization subject to linear constraints on the variables. Modifications have also been made to deal with nonlinear constraints. The thesis is divided into three sections : In Part 1, relevant previous work in the field of Nonlinear Programming is reviewed. In Part 2, the methods of minimization are presented and their convergence properties established. Numerical examples are presented and discussed in relation to other methods. In:Part 3, the methods are applied to a specific problem in chemical engineering : that of an optimal design of a multicomponent distillation column.
