The ionic species produced on dissolving small quantities of ferric compounds either alone, or in the presence of additives, in solvents N,N-dimethyl formamide, (DMF), or dimethyl sulphoxide, (DMSO), and in solvent/styrene mixtures at 20°C and 60°C have been studied spectroscopically. The nature of the iron(III) chloro-complexes has been established by studying the ultraviolet spectra of solutions containing model compounds such as hexakis(N,N-dimethyl formamide) iron(III) tetrafluoroborate, [Fe(DMF)6](BF4)3, A, hexakis (dimethyl sulphoxide) iron(III) tetrafluoroborate, [Fe(DMSO)6](BF4)3, D, and tetraethyl ammonium tetrachloroferrate(III), (C2H5)4NFeC14, B, in the presence of varying amounts of lithium chloride. The tetrafluoroborate salts were chosen for study since BF4- ions show little tendency to complex.
