Any biharmonic function may be represented in terms of two harmonic functions, which can be identified as simple source potentials. The boundary densities which generate these potentials throughout any domain are determined by two coupled linear integral equations. Procedures are given for solving such equations numerically, for smoothing out sharp corners on the boundary and checking numerical results. The method is applied to find stress distribution in notched bars under various edge conditions of loading and in certain problems of thin elastic plates subject to transverse loading.
