Abstract:
A potential model yielding a stable Body Centered Cubic (B.C.C.) lattice is developed for the transition metals Fe, V, Mo, Nb, Ta and W. The model has been used to investigate core energies and widths of dislocations on the (1 1 0) slip-plane. Edge dislocations are found to be narrow and energetically the most favourable. Values for the Peirels-Habarro force for edge dislocations are deduced by moving the dislocation line. The migration energies of a vacancy, both in the perfect lattice and in the vicinity of an edge-dislocation are also found.
