This thesis describes the labelling of the synthetic polymers poly(methacrylic acid) and its copolymers with methacrylamide with stable nitroxide free radicals and an analysis of the hyperfine line widths of the e.s.r. spectra of such spin-labelled polymers which can yield information on the dynamics of the polymer chains. Labels were incorporated at specific sites along the main chain by reaction of a small amino containing nitroxide with the acid groups on the methacrylic polymers. Analysis of the e.s.r. spectra of the labelled polymers in organic solvents allowed the rotational correlation time tR for diffusion to be calculated, and the anisotropic nature of the rotational reorientation to be determined. Analysis of the e.s.r.spectra of the labelled polymers in aqueous solution allowed only approximate values for tR to be calculated, but analysis of the spectra showed that spin-labelling is a very sensitive technique for monitoring conformational changes in macromolecules. Spin-labelling is also shown to be a very sensitive technique for studying macromolecular adsorption, allowing both adsorption isotherms and the conformation of the polymer at the solid/liquid interface to be determined.
