A considerable amount of electrochemical research has been committed to the study of chalcopyrite, but as voltammetry indicates several surface layer transformations which are difficult to ascribe to particular reactions, cyclic photocurrent voltammetry, photocurrent spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy were employed to elucidate the nature of the product layers formed on chalcopyrite under a wide range of conditions. Naturally occurring samples of chalcopyrite were used throughout, once it was established that consistent solid state and electrochemical data were obtained from them. The investigation was related to the predictions of a potential-pH diagram calculated from critically assessed thermodynamic data: for example, the formation of n-type CuFeO2 under oxidising conditions is thermodynamically feasible
