Abstract:
The results of a series of experiments carried out in DPF-78, a 60 kV, 28 kJ plasma focus device located at the Institut fur Plasmaforschung, University of Stuttgart, are presented. This work was carried out under a CEC collaboration agreement. The following diagnostics were employed simultaneously: current and voltage monitors, schlieren photography, time integrated neutron measurements and optical streak photography. Two new techniques were developed to study the temporal and spatial evolution of hot spots, and the polar distribution of the neutron emission. These techniques are: the Large Slit Axially Displaced Radially Resolved Multipinhole x-ray streak photography (LSADRRM) and a neutron detection technique that is based in a combination of plastic scintillator with fluorescent fibres. Particular emphasis was placed on correlating the results from different diagnostics, in order to analyse the relevant mechanisms involved in the pinch evolution and in the neutron production.
