This thesis addresses two similar problems based on two level systems interacting with a Fermi liquid. The Kondo effect in quantum dots is studied using a Riemann-Hilbert approach. In previous calculations, the bias voltage is assumed to play the same role as temperature. We find, however, that the bias seems to enter correlation functions in a way that temperature does not. Because of this we argue that standard approaches may require some modification. The second part of the thesis concerns decoherence in charge qubits. The models so far considered are shown to contain serious flaws, as the impurities that lead to decoherence are unlikely to be effective. We introduce the interacting resonant level to address these issues. We find for this model that impurities can become effective and that decoherence is enhanced.
