Abstract: | |||||
Pattern formation is a phenomenon that arises in various areas including biology, physics, geology and materials science. A great deal of work has been done on understanding aspects of pattern formation in terms of the spatial structures that evolve and the amplitude of the modes that make up the pattern. The present investigation is focused on the onset and weakly nonlinear development of convection of a three-dimensional porous medium heated from below where the flow is subject to Darcy’s law and the Boussinesq approximation. Emphasis is placed on flows in horizontal layers confined by lateral boundaries forming a square or rectangular planform
domain.
