Abstract: | |||||
Jose de Churriguera's work has never been analysed in detail
and its precise extent has always been uncertain; the
association of Churriguera's name with a special manner of
building has led to increased confusion; Churriguera is at present a fabulous figure in the history of Spanish Baroque.
This thesis attempts to re-examine the actual facts with regard
to Churriguera's life and work; during recent years several
reliable writers brought to light new information which throws
doubts on many of the dates usually given for Churriguera's
buildings and this new evidence suggests too that he needs an
entirely new family history. Working from these valuable
references whioh have been acknowledged in the text, the writer
has reconsidered all the available evidence with regard to
Jose de Churriguera's life and work he has examined a number
of original documents and has examined during several visits to Spain, all the work under discussion.
The first section illustrates by means of references to existing texts, the growth of an entirely fictitious Jose de Churriguera.
The section continues with an attempt to build up the actual facts and supports these by references to original documents; the original documents prove that Jose de Churriguera's birth actually occurs some time after the date originally given.
