1,4-Addition reactions of lithium cuprate reagents to enones are C-C bond forming reactions and find broad application in organic chemistry. Little is known about the structural properties of the reagents and the mechanistic aspects of the reaction. In this thesis the structure in solid state and the behaviour in solution of these cuprate species are investigated. In particular, the structure in solution is highly relevant to the mechanism of conjugate addition reactions. Consequently there is a strong emphasis in this thesis on the correlation of solution studies with solid-state structures. Several different types of organocuprates are established in organometallic chemistry which can be classified into cyanocuprates, homocuprates and heterocuprates.
