This thesis describes the background and research applied to the area of metalloenzymes focusing on vanadium haloperoxidases and acid phosphatases. Using the information on the structure of the active sites of these enzymes, the disciplines of host-guest and supramolecular chemistry were applied to design a library of receptors (hosts) that were organically synthesised In the laboratory. A majority of these receptors were shown by MNR titrations to bind phosphate and/or vanadate, structurally and functionally mimicking the active sites of these enzymes.
