This thesis describes approaches towards the construction of the lignan framework and strategies for the synthesis of the cladiellins. We envisaged these targets arising from the y-butyrolactones generated in the atom transfer radical cyclisation of trichloroacetates catalysed by the copper (I) diheptylbipyridyl complex 54.
