In 2003 a crack team of particle physicists from around the world came together in a conference for the first time on the subject of forward proton taggers at 420m for the LHC. That same collection of organisations is now involved in the design, installation and study of the physics potential of such detectors. If you have a diffractive cross section that needs investigating, and if you can find them, maybe you can commission ... The FP420 collaboration. The main body of the work presented in this thesis is intended to show that the longitudinal momentum loss measurement of the 420m detectors, and therefore, the mass resolution of diffractively produced central system, can be accurately calibrated using diffractively photoproduced muon pairs which are well measured in the central ATLAS detector. It is concluded that the effect of the calibration error on the resolution of the mass of a 120GeV Higgs boson produced in diffractive events is as low as O.5GeV. In addition we find that the total error in the mass measurement in this manner is 2.7GeV.
