Leather tanning is regarded as one of the most profitable industries in India but also one of the major sources of pollution, particularly in the State of Tamil Nadu, where more than 70% of the tannery industry is located. The resulting sludge waste is currently being disposed onto land around the tanneries, resulting in extensive contamination especially chromium used in the tanning process. The work described in this thesis aims to find a potentially locally usable method to reduce the toxic CR and bioavailable Cr fractions viz. water soluble and exchangeable-Cr in the sludge-contaminated soil through addition of organic wastes.
