This thesis addresses the development of robust partial least squares for the purpose of generating data useful for the development of process models. In particular it focuses on the use of such techniques in the analysis of spectroscopic data obtained from catalytic reactions undertaken by researchers within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. A new approach was found to be necessary as analysis of the literature yielded that existing robust partial least squares (RPLS)techniques were insufficient and that a new strategy was required in order to remove commonly encountered outliers from input data sets which would otherwise adversely affect the development of the first-principal rate equation models. Once obtained the use of genetic programming (GP)was examined as a possible method by which the generated data could be used to develop these first-principle models.
