Near infra-red (NIR) observations of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399 and the grand design
spiral M83 are presented.
The NIR adaptive optics assisted observations of NGC 1399 resolve the CO (D.JL = 2)
absorption bands within the sphere of influence of the predicted super-massive black hole at the
centre of the giant elliptical galaxy. The observations were made with NAOS-CONICA (ESO
