Given a knot 1C in the manifold S3, the operation of drilling out a tubular neighbourhood of the knot and then gluing in a solid torus such that its meridian curve goes to a (p, q)-curve on the torus boundary of the knot exterior is called Dehn surgery. In nontrivial cases, the product of this operation is a manifold different from S3. We examine this operation, first by fixing properties of the resulting manifold in order to deduce the surgery knot, then by fixing the knot to deduce properties of the resulting manifold.
