Abstract: | |||||
Utilising local case studies, this research investigates current public art commissioning practice in Northern Ireland, with the intention of providing a better practice model for the process. Newly commissioned visual public art is consistently emerging in our environment - in cities and towns, rural and green areas, beside road networks, at healthcare centres, in recreational locations and in retail outlets. Existing guidelines relating to public art commissioning do not cover the complete process or the future care of the artwork produced. This research has revealed elements in the current commissioning process that may prevent a successful outcome.
