Ruthenium-catalysed ring-closing metathesis has recently emerged as a powerful tool for the synthetic organic chemist. This can largely be attributed to the design of well-defined catalysts that show both increased activity and functional group tolerance. The aims of the studies detailed in this thesis involve the design of novel routes to substituted aromatic heterocycles which employ ring-closing metathesis as the key step.
