The work presented here focuses on the development of evolution based algorithms for locating damping materials efficiently. The algorithms chosen in this thesis follow the Cellular Automata (CA) principle, in which the overall global behaviour of a system can be computed by cells that only interact with their neighbours based on local information. Instead of optimising the damping performance of the systems considered, the strategy adopted here attempts to meet criteria for adequacy. By obtaining damping locations that provide good levels of damping rather than approach saves considerable computational cost. Additionally, it is known that such a strategy provides improved robustness against uncertainty in the specification of the problem.
