The high-density, multi-anaylate chips required for genomic and proteomic research requires economic and reproducible surface patterning methodology that allows oiled positioning of chemically distinct active areas. A major challenge with current bio-sensing devices is the need for surface chemistry that enables the immobilisation of functionally active biomolecules while avoiding sample migration and other interactions that lead to non-specific background signals. This project addresses methods for the precise control of microarray surface chemistry that will enable micron-scale patterning of bio-reactive regions on a bioalert background produced by plasma polymerisation techniques.
