A detailed understanding of the secondary stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs) and other mass-transferring binaries is of vital importance if we are to fully understand the behavior and evolution of such systems. Magnetic activity, for example, plays an important role in the angular momentum evolution of the binary and has also been linked to the orbital period, mean brightness and mean outburst duration of CVs.
