Constraints on quintessence dark energy models are obtained from a combination of recent observational data, including Type Ia supernovae, the distance to the surface of last scattering as encoded by the cosmic microwave background, and the angular size of baryon acoustic oscillations as encoded by the power spectrum of luminous red galaxies. Focus is given to the Bayesian framework for parameter estimation and model selection, for assessing the observational support for particular model classes and data set consistency.
