Despite world-wide commercial production of Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Sing. and the availability of several hundred strains, at present no method of objectively identifiying each strain has been published. Experiments were carried out to determine the usefulness of pyrolysis-gas-liquid chromatography (P.G.L.C.), polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of isoenzymes, and thin-layer chromatography of phenolic compounds to differentiate strains. Both P.G.L.C. and electrophoresis were successful in identifying the white and cream strains of A. bisporus studied. Greater differences were found between the two species A. bisporus and A. bitorquis than between strains of A. bisporus.
